For over a hundred years, Ferndale developed as a dairy farming and cattle ranching community. The large Victorian buildings were built in the late 1800's and early 1900's and were called "butterfat palaces" due to the importance of the local dairy industry. Since the 1960's the town added an eclectic artistic influence, which you will see in the art galleries, the blacksmith gallery, the fine clothing shops, and the Victorian variety stores.
Depending on the time of year you come to Ferndale, you might see one of the wonderful town events. In May you can see the Portuguese Holy Ghost Festival, the Memorial Day parade or the zany and infamous Kinetic Sculpture Race. The children's Pet Parade is in June. On the 4th of July we start with fire truck rides for the kids, a parade down Main Street, followed by a barbeque and in the evening fireworks at the fairgrounds. In August plan to attend the Humboldt County Fair to see horse racing, carnival events, art and gem shows, and livestock shows. In October you can see the Homecoming Parade. Finally, in December you can see the fantastic Christmas Lighted Tractor Parade and the Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration. Also, Ferndale has the tallest living Christmas tree in the country!
